| Issue 1/2019 Dear Readers of the Lufthansa Policy Brief,The Lufthansa Group is investing in sustainable mobility: the Group has ordered a total of 40 long-haul Boeing B787 and Airbus A350 aircraft with a list price of 12 billion US dollars. The state-of-the-art long-haul aircraft consume about 25 percent less kerosene than their predecessors and are significantly quieter. In total, the Lufthansa Group has 221 aircraft on the order list, which will be delivered by 2027. The list price is approximately $43 billion. The newly ordered long-haul twin-engine aircraft will replace older, four-engined airplanes. In addition to the better economy, the significantly lower CO2 emissions of this new generation of long-haul aircraft were crucial for the investment decision. Sustainability and environmental responsibility are becoming increasingly important as a criterion for our decisions.
In this regard, the preparations for the summer flight schedule are sobering. From our side, we have provided more aircraft reserves, additional staff and more buffer times in our timetables to ensure punctuality and stability. But Eurocontrol's outlook for European air traffic control services does not bode well. For the summer of 2019, delays due to a lack of capacity in air traffic control are again predicted. German airspace will be particularly affected. Through detouring and overloading the upper airspace, many thousands of tons of additional CO2 will be emitted unnecessarily.
In the future, too, the Lufthansa Group will invest significantly in environmentally friendly mobility, offer its employees good and secure jobs and continue to inspire travellers throughout the world. Our 2018 business figures demonstrate that the company does its homework. Simultaneously, we campaign to ensure that the political framework conditions are adequately reformed.
We wish you a pleasant reading on these and other topics

DronesCreating rules to improve safety
Almost 500,000 drones are currently being flown in Germany, and the tendency is increasing sharply. Of these, around 5 percent are used for commercial purposes. Completely new areas of the service sector are being created – with positive effects on new jobs and prosperity. However, drones are more and more frequently being sighted in the areas directly surrounding airports. This brings an increased danger that drones may collide with aircraft or impair flight operations. The boom is therefore throwing up some important questions in terms of security policy. ...more
